About 2nd Grade
Second grade at Mountain Elementary is an exciting year of learning. Throughout the year students study a number of hands on engaging themes including geology, physics and life cycles. Thematic learning is integrated throughout the curriculum including reading, writing and the arts. Students explore learning with many field trips including fossil hunting at Sea Cliff State Beach, roller coaster building at the San Jose Tech Museum and shark life cycles at the Seymour Center.
The 2nd grade classroom structure fosters choice and independence for students. Both the math and the reading block are designed in the Daily 5 format where students self select independent activities. The writing block is organized as a writers workshop where students select writing topics that are meaningful and relevant to their life. Some of the reading themes studied are nonfiction books, personal narratives, biographies, poetry and traditional literature. In math, students focus on place value, adding 2 and 3 digit numbers, word problems, foundations of multiplication and division, time, money and geometry. In writing students write nonfiction books, personal narratives, science fair projects, opinion letters, poetry, and tall tales. The second grade year offers many opportunities for personal and academic growth.
