On Tuesday we went to the Seymour Center for a fossils laboratory. In our lab we learned about how fossils in Santa Cruz County were formed. We had many hands on activities like matching current shells with old fossils and testing to identify if an object is a fossil. We also explored the center’s touch tank and learned all about Baleen whales. It was a great day! Two weeks ago we had a special guest presenter in the classroom. Julianna’s dad, Dan White, spoke to us about writing nonfiction books. Dan taught us a lot about nonfiction book writing like how he researches for his book, how he revises his writing, and how he makes his books entertaining for his readers. We especially liked his story about a crazy marmot in the mountains. Thank you Dan for coming to our classroom! We learned a lot about nonfiction books and are excited to start out nonfiction books this week.

Dear Families, I hope you enjoyed a restful break with your family. Thank you to the drivers for last Tuesday’s filed trip to the Seymour Center. We enjoyed learning about fossils together and appreciate your help in making the field trip a success! In this week’s packet you will find a December book order. Your book orders have allowed us to frequently supply our classroom library and guided reading library with new books. Your orders make a difference! I will be placing the orders this Friday, December 2nd. You may submit your order in Friday’s packet or order with the online link below. Have a great week!
-Libby Dear Families,
I hope you had a wonderful long weekend with your children. I greatly enjoyed meeting with you all during conferences last week. Thank you for your dedication to your child and your child’s education. Also, thank you to those families who turned in the field trip permission slip for our Tuesday, November 22nd field trip to the Seymour Center. Currently, we need at least two more drivers for our field trip to continue. If you are available to drive, please email me at [email protected]. Thank you! Don’t forget next school is only Monday and Tuesday. We will be off from school November 23rd, November 24th, and November 25th for Thanksgiving break. Have a great week! -Libby Nonfiction Reading This week we began our final bend of studying nonfiction books. In this bend we are learning strategies for reading more than one nonfiction book about a topic. First, we began previewing our nonfiction books by taking a 'sneak peek’ of the book. We looked at the title of the book, the cover of the book, the back of the book called the blurb, the table of contents of the book, and the pictures for both books. We predicted what we thought both books would teach us. We payed close attention to parts where the books went together and could teach us similar things about a topic. For example, two books could teach us about where Koalas live. Next, we learned to notice when another book adds on to what we know about a topic. For example, reading a Tigers by Laura Marsh we learned tigers could be found near water. Then, we read Tigers by Valerie Boden and learned tigers liked to live near swamps. Learning that tigers like to live near swamps added on to what we know about the topic and grew our knowledge across our two books. We will continue to learn strategies for reading more than one book on a topic this week. Math We have begun our next math unit on addition and subtraction. This week we reviewed mental math strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems. To use this strategy, we learned how to break numbers down into tens and ones. This helps us add or subtract the tens and the ones. Once the tens and ones have been added and subtracted, we add the sums or differences together to make a new number. We will apply our new learning to word problems this week and move into adding and subtracting three digit numbers next week.
Dear Families, I hope you had a restful fall weekend. This week is fall conferences. There will be half days until 12:35 Monday through Thursday. There is no school on Friday for Veteran’s day. Below is the sign up for fall conferences. Please arrive to conferences on time to ensure you receive the full amount of time. Thank you in advance for calling if you are late or can’t make your conference time. I look forward to a productive discussion celebrating your child’s successes and collaborating on how best to support your child in 2nd grade. In this week’s packet you will find a field trip permission slip to the Seymour Center for November 22nd. We will be furthering our studying of geology by participating in a fossils lab. Thank you for returning your permissions slips with a check for $7 to Sharon by Friday. It should be a lovely day for your child!
Last Monday was an exciting day in 2nd grade. In the morning we had a challenge of counting the pumpkin seeds in 9 pumpkins. We counted 3,342 seeds by grouping seeds into 10s, 50s, 100s, and 1,000s. After PE we had a class party where we cooked spooky treats including banana ghosts, spooky spiders, vampire smiles, and monster eyes. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped make our day so special! Please see the pictures below! Have a great week!-Libby |
