I hope you enjoyed the lovely weekend. Thank you to those who supported with last week’s science fair. The student’s worked extremely hard at independently designing and publishing their own projects. The science fair was a wonderful celebration of all their hard work.
There have been some colds running through the class. In an effort to remain healthy, I requesting donations of environmentally friendly hand sanitizer and table wipes.
We will begin a new writing unit on book recommendations. Students are invited to bring a book from home they enjoy to class on Tuesday. We will share our favorite books together as a class. Also, in the packet, students will be asked to collect addresses of any friend of family member they would like to send a book recommendation to. I’ll be gladly accepting donations of stamps and envelopes to send our letters in.
In math students will begin to add two and three digit numbers with regrouping and subtracting with regrouping.

Reading: We will be continuing our studies of people who fought for a cause. This week we will read stories about Eleanor Roosevelt and her legacy in fighting for human rights. In doing so, we will begin to learn author’s purpose in comparing and contrasting a Time for Kids Biography by Diana El Nabli with the profile of Eleanor’s childhood in a book Eleanor by Barbara Cooney.
Writing: On Tuesday we will begin our opinion writing unit. Students will be writing opinion book recommendations. Students will have many different ways to publish their book recommendations, they can choose to send letters to their friends, they can choose to post their letters in the library or around the school, students can also post their reviews on the class website.
Math: We will begin to learn 3 digit addition with regrouping using place value drawings. We will begin two digit subtraction with regrouping with discs later in the week. Students will be also working independently on our Silicon Valley Mathematics Institute’s MARS assessments.
Science: We will be incorporating STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) challenges into our study of balance and motion. This week students will be designing paper airplanes and paper airplane catapults.
